Electronic signs to be allowed by Florida city

Osmond Beach, Florida, is preparing to enter the 21st century - at least when it comes to signs.

According to an article in the Dayton Beach News-Journal, the mayor and two city commissioners in Osmond Beach are preparing to allow businesses to install electric signs with changeable sign letters throughout the city's public roads and highways.

In a recent town meeting, Mayor Fred Costello and Commissioners Ed Kelley and Bill Partington made a request that their staff members create an ordinance allowing the basic electronic signs to be put up on the major highways in the city, the News-Journal reports. In order to limit the visual impact, signs would only be allowed to change lettering every 12 hours.

Not everyone in the town is ready to allow the new, technologically advanced signs. Commissioner Troy Kent was against the electronic signs anywhere.

"I don't dislike them. I loathe them," Kent said in an interview with the News-Journal. "They diminish the classy, elegant feel of our Osmond Beach. This isn't anti-church, or anti-business ... I can see (these signs) all up and down the road. This is a big change in the look and feel of our city."

But as the city moves forward with plans, his pleas are falling on deaf ears.

Having electronic signs that can easily change their message can prove to be a valuable way for businesses to attract customers. Depending on whether there's a special sale or other deals, many business owners are eager to use the technology.
