Florida business owners may get more sign rights

A city council in Florida recently looked at a measure that would ease restrictions on signs that business owners can display, after pressure from many in the community.

The St. Petersburg Times reports that the city council in Brooksville considered a new proposal that would allow businesses to obtain a permit to post signs. As it stands now, a variety of signs, including feather banners, are prohibited from being put up.

One business owner pushing hard for the new proposal is Jay Tinkham, who was told by a code enforcement official that he needed to take down a sign or face a sizable fine.

"It's just too strict," Tinkham said in an interview with the news provider. "I understand there's a need for sign regulations, but we're in a tough economic downfall right now. Businesses are hurting."

Out west, lawmakers are considering similar measures. The Forest Grove News-Times reports that lawmakers in Forest Grove, Oregon, will soon decide whether to allow more off-premise signs.
