Hanging street signs allowed in Pennsylvania city

The government in one Pennsylvania community recently voted to approve a sign ordinance that would force businesses to have conforming signs in an area of the city.

The Times Leader reports that the Pittson Council voted on Wednesday to approve the new regulations, which would allow businesses in the Main Street development area to allow hanging signs after paying a permit fee and allow old, nonconforming signs to be grandfathered in. While the majority of leaders were in favor of the new measures, Councilmen Danny Argo and Joseph McLean voiced opposition.

The news source reports that Argo said new rules were unnecessary and McLean contended that the new fees would add a burden to those trying to successfully run a business. On the other side of the issue were the other council members and the city's mayor, Jason Klush.

Local politics often plays a big role in how sign policy is formulated. While there are many different opinions, a comprise is often the best way to settle disputes without getting feelings hurt along the way.
