Signs of progress for businesses on the brink of collapse

It's been all over the news for the past few years. The mounting recession has hit business owners throughout the country especially hard with consumers tightening their budgets. But just as these committed entrepreneurs get up off the ground and dust themselves off , a new challenge stands in their path - sign regulations.

Many around the country have seen the regulatory fever spread to their own backyards.

In Leesburg, Georgia, the Lee County Commissioners recently came under fire from some in the town who are upset over an ongoing ban on new signs. WALB-10 reports that the commissioners in the county extended the moratorium on new signs during a recent meeting. For many, the local government's actions are just not right.

"My concern is freedom of speech," said voter Tim Nelson in an interview with the news source. "It was really concerning to me that in the purpose of the document not once but twice it says that the purpose of the document is so that the county can protect private property rights, and I didn't know that was a purpose of the government."

The Planning Director, Bob Alexander, told the news source that the committee was working to change the current law "so that you can only have a certain amount of billboards within the county, and they've got to be a certain distance apart."

Until the lawmakers come up with final regulations, business owners in Lee County will find themselves out of luck when it comes to putting up signs. Business owners wont ever know how much business was lost due to the inaction of their local legislators.

For one hotel owner in Farragut, Tennessee, town lawmakers' latest request to alter his sign has been met with resistance.

The Farragut Press reports that a representative from the West Plaza Inn & Suites has gone before the Farragut Mucipal Commission and asked its members to create a special commercial district on a stretch of highway where the hotel is located.

"We feel it’s a reasonable request … to actually put together a separate zoning so we can actually tie a special sign ordinance to that zoning to make it reasonable for [our] sign to remain," said Damon Falconnier, a representative for the hotel owner, according to news provider.

In Waltham, Massachusetts, the city council recently defeated a measure that would have allowed the city to hire a sign code officer.

The Daily News Tribune reports that the Waltham City Council voted 8-6 against the appointment of the officer, who would have been tasked with enforcing current sign ordinances. Councilor Robert Logan, who was a strong proponent of adding a staff member to the city payroll, still stands by the proposal.

"I understand, especially in this economic time, people are desperate and are reaching for every little thing they think they can do that might bring in some additional little bit of business that will help them break even," said Councilor Robert Logan in an interview with the news source.

Logan went on to say that because enforcement was so laid back, potential customers were getting overwhelmed and businesses were actually hurting themselves.

The American dream still has a pulse these days. Despite recent struggles, America's businesses will surely find new ways to display their signs to consumers. And just maybe the lives of the next generation will be better than the one's people are living today, people are just looking positive signs.
