Menu boards and sign letters are good business

In one North Carolina city, business owners recently got an unwelcome wake-up call in the form of letters from city hall.

Downtown business owners in Fay, North Carolina, received letters from the city telling them that they would need to pay a $500 fine if they did not take down menus, fliers or sale signs. The Fay Observer reports the city has a longstanding ordinance that requires businesses to obtain a permit before displaying any signs in front of their stores. And while the law is technically on the books, many within the city's government are questioning whether the ordinance goes a bit too far.

"You can't put a menu in the restaurant?" said City Manager Dale Iman in an interview with the news source. "That's crazy. That is not good business, and we need to review that ordinance."

After city hall was flooded with complaints, local officials sent follow-up letters to the 22 small businesses that had received them, informing them that they were not at any risk of being fined.

One of the best ways small businesses are able to get messages out is by displaying signs in front of their establishments. Restrictive city ordinances can often lead to less profit for store owners.
