Panera has become the first restaurant chain to openly display calorie counts on their menus and signs, reports WGRZ.

Restaurant chains with more than 20 locations now have to publicly display calorie counts on all menus and signage, as part of a new law set forth under the government healthcare plan. The law, passed last week, requires restaurants to make the changes within two years time. Panera is the first chain to update its menus to reflect this new regulation.

The American Cancer Society believes the law will not only help prevent people from becoming overweight, but also those who already suffer from obesity.

"This whole initiative prompted us to take an event closer look at our menu offerings," Scott Davis, Panera's Chief Concept Officer, told WGRZ. "It comes from our commitment to providing nutrition information and wholesome foods customers can trust."

Similar laws have been in effect for a while now in several states, including New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and California, according to CBS3. The new law supersedes all state-level laws.
