Menu board sign rules amended in Massachusetts town

The sign rules in one beach community are in for a change thanks to a recent vote by the town's commissioners.

The town of Rehoboth Beach recently approved a new sign ordinance that seeks to make enforcement easier on town regulators. The Cape Cod Gazette reports that the Rehoboth Beach commissioners recently voted to change the way signs are posted and the language used on them. The major changes include a new requirement to post a date and numbered sticker on menu display boards, wall signs and directional signs.

One issue left unresolved was whether or not real estate signs would have to follow the new regulations.

"I believe that the Realtors have cooperated to a certain level. But I think if we are going to take on the real estate signs, and I think there are some inconsistencies in the code, I think there are some things that are not being enforced that could be enforced," said Rehobeth Beach Mayor Sam Cooper in an interview with the news source. "But I think that really needs to be a discussion all on its own."

Other tourist communities have tackled the issue of sign ordinances recently. The Rockport Pilot reports that a current proposal before the city council seeks to allow sandwich signs directly in front of the businesses they advertise.
