Vinyl car lettering affected by sign laws in Dunwoody

After 18 months of discussion, the city council in Dunwoody, Georgia, has yet to make progress on a proposed sign ordinance.

The Dunwoody Crier reports that the Dunwoody City Council recently voted 3-3 to defer the proposed ordinance to later date and send it back to the Dunwoody Community Council for additional review. The ordinance under review would ban advertising like vinyl car lettering on the sides of vehicles from being displayed, which has drawn fire from citizens in the city. Many see this as an attack on the First Amendment and even the very ideals that America was founded on.

"My rights as a citizen are being taken away," said Gerri Penn in an interview with the newspaper. "You’re making changes and I have not, as a taxpayer, had a chance to review."

Many in the community wanted the council to take its time with the ordinance based on the ramifications it would have. Bob Lundsten said that he didn't want them to "vote on something... that has been before the public for such a short amount of time."

Not all cities are so indecisive when it comes to sign ordinances. In South Orange, New Jersey, a recently approved ordinance will allow businesses to display sidewalk signs, SouthOrangePatch.com reports.
