Window sign sparks controversy in New York

A window sign in New York is causing a major controversy for many in the community who want to see it taken down permanently.

Modern Window of New York reports that an animated business window sign in Lancaster has ruffled the feathers of those in charge of keeping the aesthetics of the area in order. The chairman of the Lancaster Historic District Commission, Michael Meyer, wrote a letter to the village board asking its members to look at whether or not the sign violated the current ordinance.

Though the current regulations ban window signs from being displayed outside of a building, there is nothing that prohibits window signs from being hung inside a business. Many have come to the defense of the business owner, saying that it does not add visual clutter to the historic area.

"It is inside the premise of the business that I am glad is taking up residence within the village business district. I think often times we are on a seesaw where we try to balance historic concerns with the current business attractiveness of our village. I think we want both at times and that can be difficult," remarked Village of Lancaster Trustee Edward Marki in an interview with the news source.

Historic communities are often protective of their heritage and don't want signs to overtake the area. It is up to local lawmakers to both protect the rights of businesses and pass laws that reflect the needs of businesses.
