A new casino resort in Ferndale, Washington will use flashing neon marquee signs to attract visitors from the highway, according to an article published Tuesday.

Representatives from the Lummi Indian nation announced that they will install illuminated marquee signs to promote a new hotel, spa and casino, as well as a local Indian smoke shop, the Bellingham Herald reported. The signs will be exempt from the state's strict signage laws despite their close proximity to the highway because they will be on Indian land.

"We figured it was better to work cooperatively with the Lummis rather than try to oppose it," Ferndale city administrator Greg Young told the newspaper.

Local businesses will be able to rent space on the marquee signs, the article noted. One will feature a message reading "Welcome to Ferndale."

Flashing neon Marquee signs have long been iconic symbols of casinos, as well as invaluable promotional tools for gambling institutions. Indeed, the Las Vegas Strip, the country's most famous gambling area, may be as famous for its signage as for its casinos.
