Aluminum is lighter, won't rust and is less expensive. Aluminum has a natural color of silver but can be painted any color. Bronze and brass are harder and more expensive copper alloy metals. Bronze and brass can be polished or buffed to provide a brilliant mirror like finish. Over time, bronze will produce a natural green patina. Any of the metal materials can be used to produce cut metal letters signs.
Precision cut with high pressure water jet and laser. The metal comes in a flat sheet and is placed on a table where a computer driven waterjet cuts each letter to precision. Waterjet cut characters are made using a fine, high pressure stream of water that carries an abrasive mineral. This fine stream cuts and allows for sharp, precise corners and intricate detail on small letters and characters.
The most significant difference is that cast metal letters have more depth than flat cut-out metal letters. Cast metal letters are hollow in the back, so you’re not paying for all the material that won't be seen anyway. Cast metal letters are available in over fifty font styles and standard sizes, whereas flat cut metal has unlimited sizes and fonts. Otherwise, both cast metal and flat cut letters have the same mineral properties and finish selections.
Metal sign letters are available in different gauges or thicknesses based upon the type of metal. The metal gauge adds depth and strength to the sign letters and also adds material to attach its mounting hardware. However, thicker metal costs more than thinner metal. At certain gauges it is more economical to provide cast metal letters to get the same depth at a lower cost. Aluminum is available in 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch and 1 inch thick. Brass and bronze metals are available in 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch thick.
In the finishing process, the letter is bead-blasted to make the surface smooth then stroke sanded to give it a natural satin finish. The metal can be left with a natural satin finish, painted, or dipped in a bath for surface pigmentation. All metal letters are coated with a two-part hardened acrylic polyurethane clear-coat, then sent to an oven for baking. The commercial painting process produces metal letters for outdoor signs.
Metal sign letters are installed with studs into a wall. Aluminum and bronze letters are heavier than plastic so must be stud mounted and glued. We recommend a mounting template that shows the outline of each character, spacing between letters and hand punched hole locations of each stud showing where to drill. Once taped to the wall, holes are then drilled and filled with adhesive.
