how flat cut out metal letters are produced

How do aluminum, brass and bronze letters compare?

Aluminum is lighter, won't rust and is less expensive. Aluminum has a natural color of silver but can be painted any color. Bronze and brass are harder and more expensive copper alloy metals. Bronze and brass can be polished or buffed to provide a brilliant mirror like finish. Over time, bronze will produce a natural green patina. Any of the metal materials can be used to produce cut metal letters signs.

How are large metal sign letters produced?

Precision cut with high pressure water jet and laser. The metal comes in a flat sheet and is placed on a table where a computer driven waterjet cuts each letter to precision. Waterjet cut characters are made using a fine, high pressure stream of water that carries an abrasive mineral. This fine stream cuts and allows for sharp, precise corners and intricate detail on small letters and characters.

What is the difference between flat cut metal letters and cast metal letters?

The most significant difference is that cast metal letters have more depth than flat cut-out metal letters. Cast metal letters are hollow in the back, so you’re not paying for all the material that won't be seen anyway. Cast metal letters are available in over fifty font styles and standard sizes, whereas flat cut metal has unlimited sizes and fonts. Otherwise, both cast metal and flat cut letters have the same mineral properties and finish selections.

Are aluminum, brass and bronze metal letters available in different thickness?

Metal sign letters are available in different gauges or thicknesses based upon the type of metal. The metal gauge adds depth and strength to the sign letters and also adds material to attach its mounting hardware. However, thicker metal costs more than thinner metal. At certain gauges it is more economical to provide cast metal letters to get the same depth at a lower cost. Aluminum is available in 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch and 1 inch thick. Brass and bronze metals are available in 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch thick.

What finishes do metal sign letters have?

In the finishing process, the letter is bead-blasted to make the surface smooth then stroke sanded to give it a natural satin finish. The metal can be left with a natural satin finish, painted, or dipped in a bath for surface pigmentation. All metal letters are coated with a two-part hardened acrylic polyurethane clear-coat, then sent to an oven for baking. The commercial painting process produces metal letters for outdoor signs.

How are metal letters for walls installed?

Metal sign letters are installed with studs into a wall. Aluminum and bronze letters are heavier than plastic so must be stud mounted and glued. We recommend a mounting template that shows the outline of each character, spacing between letters and hand punched hole locations of each stud showing where to drill. Once taped to the wall, holes are then drilled and filled with adhesive.

  • Do flat cut metal letters come in different colors?

The beauty of natural metal is one of the benefits of flat cut out sign letters. The metal letters can be painted or chemically treated. An automotive acrylic polyurethane paint is sprayed on the metal letter then oven baked. The grain texture is seen through the gloss paint. We offer 46 standard colors and can also custom match Pantone colors and sheens. If you are going to paint over the metal finish we recommend that you use aluminum as it is a less expensive metal.

  • What are anodized aluminum letters?

Anodizing is an electrochemical process that makes the aluminum skin harder and changes its color. The aluminum can be pigmented and will change the color of the sign letters. Anodized aluminum letters are unaffected by UV sunlight, will not crack or peel and perform better in harsh weather environments such as coastal areas.

  • What are oxidized bronze letters?

By their very nature, bronze sign letters will react to oxygen over time and change color to a greenish patina. The bronze patina will vary from letter to letter depending on temperature and humidity. Bronze sign letters can be chemically oxidized, then hand-rubbed to produce an antique look to the sign letter face.

  • Do metal sign letters rust or hold up in ocean weather?
