The acrylic material has durable chemical properties so they can last outdoors in extreme hot or cold temperatures and resist fading in direct UV sun light. Acrylic lettering with a metal laminate, however, is not outdoor rated because its edges will chip over time.

How do you install acrylic sign letters?

Acrylic sign letters are typically glued with pin mount hardware when installing outdoors. Depending on the thickness of the acrylic, the pin, or stud, would either be screwed into the back of the sign letters and can be mounted flush to the wall or if the material is too thin, the stud would require a stand-off to hold it. Double face tape is a popular mounting method when installing indoors, it needs to go on a smooth, non porous surface. We recommend adding a bead of silicone or epoxy adhesive along with the double face tape for extra support.

What problems can occur with acrylic mounting hardware?

Acrylic material has certain chemical properties that need to be considered when attaching it to a sign. Specifically, acrylic slightly expands and contracts to temperature. We do not recommend screwing or nailing through an acrylic letter. It is best to attach the letter with glue behind the face to conceal the mounting hardware. If you plan to drill through acrylic it is best to slightly oversize the holes so the acrylic won’t expand and crack around the fastener such as a screw or nail. It is best to use an acrylic adhesive to attach the letters. Double-sided foam tape is an indoor product because UV rays will deteriorate the foam.

Acrylic letters are cut out from a sheet of solid acrylic by a computer driven laser. Formed plastic building letters are economical, have three dimensional depth and fast turnaround. But formed plastic letters are only available in select font styles and sizes. Flat cut out acrylic sign letters can be cut in any font style and used for logos and graphics.

The plastic acrylic also offers high resistance to chemicals and corrosion and is combined with UV inhibitors that help prevent colors from fading. The shape of each character is cut-out by a computer driven laser. Once the laser cut acrylic lettering has been cut out, mounting hardware is attached for use during your installation.

Acrylic letters are available in different gauges or thicknesses based upon the type of metal. The plastic gauge adds depth and strength to the sign letters and also adds material to attach its mounting hardware. However, thicker acrylic costs more than thinner acrylic. We offer acrylic in 1/8 inch, 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch thickness.

Acrylic can be a solid pigmented color or a painted color. There is a limited selection of pigmented colors based upon its thickness. We spray automotive acrylic polyurethane paint on the acrylic letter. We offer 46 standard colors and can also custom match Pantone colors and sheens. The acrylic letters come with a lifetime guarantee but the painted letters will eventually lose their gloss over time due to sunlight.
