  • How do letter board letters hold to a felt panel?

Letterboard letters have tabs that push into grooves cut into felt letter boards. The tabs can be along both the top and bottom of the letters, named double tabbed letters, or just along the top or bottom of the letters, named single tabbed letters. Double tabbed letters attach more precisely and are easier to read. The grooves of the felt letter boards are typically cut on one quarter inch increments. Double tabbed letters are more precise because the tabs are on one quarter inch increments.

  • Can any size letter fit on my felt sign?

Letter board letters are available in sizes of one-half inch, three-quarter inch, one inch, one and one-half inch and two inches. Single tabbed letters can hold along any groove on the letter board but may hang askew. Double tabbed letters can span across multiple grooves and grip precisely. It is important that the letter board grooves are cut on on quarter inch increments. The five-sixteenth letter size was discontinued many years ago.

  • Are there different letter styles for felt framed sign?

The letters used by Davson, an early felt letter board manufacturer, were available in three styles: Helvetica, Roman, and Gothic. Helvetica is a thin stroke, gothic, easy-to-read letter style. Roman letter style had small fancy serifs and the end of the characters. And Gothic was a bold font style with notched corners. Over time, the Davson brand was acquired by Quarter, Rubbermaid and ACCO. The current owner has discontinued the Roman and Gothic styles.

  • What colors are available for plastic letters for letter boards?

White is the most popular letter color because most felt letter boards are dark colored and white provides the best contrast and readability. Letter board letters can be spray painted with Krylon which has a large variety of colors. We have discontinued producing the colors of black, blue, red, green, gold, and silver because spray painting has more options and is less expensive.

  • Why do some letter board letters break?

Sometimes the tabs of the letter will break because of the quality of the letter board and not the letter itself. Some letter boards are poorly made or have absorbed humidity that causes the groove to swell. The letter tabs will break when forcefully pushed into swollen or misaligned letter board grooves. Some letter boards in cabinets will cause the letters to break or yellow because the cabinet is not properly ventilated for UV sun rays. Then there is also the cheap import issue of using poor quality plastics. Inspect the quality and condition of your letter board to extend the life of your letters.

  • Do letter board letters and numbers come individually?

Yes, double tab Helvetica style letters are available individually in bags of 25. Most letter kits have an assorted variety of letters, numbers, and punctuation that satisfies most message requirements. But some restaurants or real estate directories need many of the same characters such as nines or R’s. A close match Helvetica style in sizes on-half inch to two inch is available.
