Alabama boat registration numbers must be placed on each side of the bow of the vessel for which it was purchased, in such a position as will make it clearly visible at all times. Arizona law states: On receipt of the application in approved form with the applicable fees, the department or its agent shall enter the application on the records of its office and issue to the applicant two current annual decals and a certificate of number stating the number issued to the watercraft and the name and address of the owner. The owner shall display the assigned number and the current annual decals in such manner as may be prescribed by rules of the commission. The number and decals shall be maintained in legible condition. The certificate of number or commission approved proof of valid certificate of number, except as provided in section 5-371, shall be available at all times for inspection by a peace officer whenever the watercraft is in operation. No number issued by another state or the United States coast guard, unless granted exemption or exception pursuant to this chapter, shall be displayed on the watercraft.
Arkansas boat registration numbers must be affixed to the forward half of each side of the vessel placed clearly visible.
The registration number must read from left to right and be at least 3 inches high. It much be in bold, block letters and of a contrasting color with its background.

Arkansas boating law states that every motorboat on the waters of this state shall be numbered. No person shall operate or give permission for the operation of any motorboat on the waters of this state and the identifying number set forth in the certificate of number is displayed on each side of the bow of the motorboat.
California vessel registration numbers issued must be displayed permanently attached to each side of the forward half of the vessel.

Colorado law states It is unlawful for any person to operate or use a vessel on the waters of this state or to possess a vessel at a vessel staging area unless the vessel has been numbered and a certificate of the number, referred to in this article as a “registration”, has been issued to the vessel by the division.
Connecticut boat registration numbers must be at least three inches high as well as contrasting in color to the background.
The boat registration number must be in an easy to read block font and attached so it is distinctly visible and legible from at least 100 feet.
No other numbers should be displayed on the vessel. There must be spaces or hyphens between the prefix, the number and the suffix, for example: CT-1234-AA.
Conneticut law states that any owner desiring to obtain a vessel registration number or registration decal shall apply to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles and shall file such proof of ownership of the vessel as the commissioner may require. Upon receipt of an application in proper form and the numbering fee, the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles shall assign a registration number or registration decal and provide the owner with a temporary certificate of number or temporary certificate of decal. The Commissioner of Motor Vehicles shall issue two registration decals and a permanent certificate. A registration decal shall be displayed on each side of the vessel at the bow in a manner prescribed by the Commissioner of Energy and Environmental Protection.
Delaware boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat.

Georgia law states that the identification number assigned to all registered vessels, except those documented by the United States Coast Guard, shall be permanently painted or attached to each side of the forward half of the vessel, and no other number may be displayed thereon. Numbers shall read from left to right, be in block characters, be of a color contrasting with the background, and be not less than three inches in height nor more than one inch apart. There shall be a hyphen or space between the prefix letters and numerals and between the numerals and the suffix letters. The hyphen or space shall be equal to the width of any letter except I.
Hawaii boat registration numbers must be painted on or permanently attached to each side of the forward half of the vessel and must be read from left to right. Registration number should be the only numbers on the forward half of the vessel.
The registration number must be at least three inches in height and of block character font. Also, they must be of a contrasting color of the background. The boat registration numbers must stay clearly visible and legible.
The numerals appearing between the two sets of letters must be separated by hyphens or spaces, for example: HA-1234-AA.
Hawaii boating law states that boat registration numbers must be painted on or permanently attached to each side of the forward half of the vessel and must be read from left to right. The number shall not be placed on the obscure underside of a flared bow where the angle prevents it from being seen from another vessel or from the shore.
Idaho boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat.
The number must be in three inch, block style lettering. The numbers should be easily read left to right. The boat registration number's color must contrast with its background color.

Idaho boating law states that The owner shall also receive a vessel number that shall be permanently assigned to the boat. The owner shall paint on or permanently attach to each side of the bow of the vessel the vessel number and validation sticker in a manner as may be prescribed by rules of the department in order that they may be completely visible, and the number shall be maintained in legible condition.
Illinois boat registration numbers must be placed on each side of the vessel and they should be placed on the forward part of the hull and the only numbers placed in that area. They must be easily read from left to right. It must start with two capital letters followed by a space, four digits, another space, and end with two capital letters, for example: IL 1234 AA.
The registration number must be at least three inches high and in a block style font. The color must contrast with its background.
Illinois boating law states that it is unlawful operation of unnumbered watercraft. Every watercraft other than non-powered watercraft on waters within the jurisdiction of this State shall be numbered. No person may operate, use, or store or give permission for the operation, usage, or storage of any such watercraft on such waters unless it has on board while in operation.
Indiana boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat.

Vessels registered in Iowa, must display their current registration decals and the Iowa issued registration numbers provided by the County Recorder. In addition, the operator must carry the registration certificate on board. Registrations must be renewed every three years and are nontransferable.
Kansas boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat.

Kansas boating law states that every undocumented, mechanically propelled vessel or sailing vessel using the waters of this state, as its state of principal use, shall be numbered, except those exempted by K.S.A. 32-1113, and amendments thereto. No person shall operate or give permission for the operation of any motorboat or vessel propelled by sail on such waters unless such vessel is numbered in accordance with this act, applicable federal law or a federally approved numbering system of another state, and unless (1) the certificate of number awarded to such vessel is in full force and effect and (2) the identifying number set forth in the certificate of number is displayed on each side of the bow of such vessel, unless otherwise provided by rules and regulations of the secretary.
Kentucky registration number assigned should be located on the bow of each side of the vessel; they must be the only number on the front half of the bow.

Kentucky boating law states that every motorboat on the waters of this state shall be numbered and currently registered in accordance with the provisions of this chapter. No person shall operate or give permission for the operation of any motorboat on such waters unless the motorboat is registered and numbered in accordance with this chapter, or in accordance with a federally approved numbering system of another state.
The number allotted should attached to each side of the forward half of the boat's hull. The Louisiana registration number must be the only number on the forward half of the boat.
The letters and numbers can be any sort of plain, block font and three inches high. The boat registration number color must contrast with the hull color and clearly placed.

Louisiana boating law states that the owner of each motorboat or sailboat requiring numbering by this state shall file an application for number with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries on forms approved by it. The owner shall paint on or attach to each side of the bow of the motorboat or sailboat the certificate of number in such manner as may be prescribed by rules and regulations of the department in order that it may be clearly visible. The number on the motorboat or sailboat shall be maintained in legible condition.
Maine boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat.

Maine boating law states that If your vessel requires registration, it is illegal to operate it or allow others to operate your vessel unless it is registered and numbered as described.
Maryland boat registration numbers must be attached to each side of the forward half of the vessel and able to be read from left to right. The registration number should be the only number on the forward half of the watercraft.

Maryland boating law states that upon receipt of the application in approved form, the Department shall issue to the applicant a certificate of boat number which shall contain the boat number issued to the vessel and additional information the Department prescribes by regulation. The certificate of boat number shall be available for inspection when the vessel is in use. The owner shall paint on or attach the boat number to each side of the forward half of the vessel's hull or superstructure for which the boat number is issued, displaying the boat number in the manner required by Department regulations and maintaining the boat number in legible condition.
Massachusetts boat registration numbers that are assigned should be attached to each side of the forward half of the boat. Boat registration numbers should be the only number on the forward half of the vessel.
It should read from left to right, be in a block letter style font; three inches high. Furthermore it should contrast with the color of the boat's hull.
The boat registration number consists of the letters MS followed by no more than four numbers and two letters. A space or hyphen must separate the letters and the numbers, for example: MS-1234-AA.
Massachusetts boating law states that subject to the exceptions listed in section two, the owner of any motorboat principally used in the commonwealth shall file an application for number with the director on a form approved by him. The application shall be signed by the owner of the motorboat, and shall be forwarded to the director together with a fee, as determined annually by the commissioner of administration under the provision of section three B of chapter seven, for an original certificate of number or renewal thereof, or for the substitution of a certificate of number of a motorboat for a motorboat previously numbered.
Michigan boat registration numbers must be attached on each side of the forward half of the vessel as high above the water line as possible; it must be the only number on the forward half of the bow.

There must have spaces or hyphens that are equal to the width of the letter "M" between the letter and number groupings (example: MC 0000 AA or MC--0000--AA).
Michigan boating law states upon receipt of a certificate of number for a vessel, the owner of that vessel shall paint on or attach in a permanent manner to each side of the forward half of the vessel the number identified in the certificate of number, in the manner prescribed by rules promulgated by the department. The secretary of state shall assign to the owner of vessels for rent or lease a block of numbers sufficient to number consecutively all of that owner's rental or lease vessels. The owner shall maintain the numbers in a legible condition.
Minnesota boat registration numbers should be placed on each side of the bow in such a position as that it is clear and legible. Boat numbers must be the only number on the forward half of the watercraft.
The number should be a color that contrasts with the background. The letters and numerals need to be able to be read from left to right and should be three inches in height. They need to be three inches high.
The numbers and letters should be separated with a space or hyphen, for example: MN-1234-AA. The MN should be separated from the numbers by a 3-inch space. Letters should be separated from numbers by a 3-inch space.
Minnesota boating law states that 86B.301 WATERCRAFT LICENSES REQUIRED. Subdivision 1.Requirement. Except as provided in subdivisions 2 and 3, a person may not operate or give permission for the operation of a watercraft that requires a watercraft license on the waters of this state.
Mississippi boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat. The number must be in three inch, block style lettering. The numbers should be easily read left to right.

Mississippi boating law states that All sailboats and every undocumented vessel equipped with propulsion machinery, whether or not such machinery is the principal source of propulsion, using the territorial and navigable waters of the State of Mississippi, and every such vessel owned in the State of Mississippi and using the high seas shall be numbered.
Missouri boat registration numbers consist of two letters followed by four numbers then two more letters that must be separated by spaces or hyphens, for example: MO 1234 AA. The boat registration number assigned must be attached to each side of the forward half of the vessel; they should be the only numbers on the forward half.
They need to be in a contrasting color to the boat. Numbers should be in a block font and three inches in height.
Montana boat registration numbers must be clearly visible on each side of the bow of the vessel as well as easily read from left to right; the registration number must be the only number on the forward half of the bow.
The boat registration number must be three inches in height and be a color contrasting with the background color of the boat.
They should contain a space or hyphen separating the "MT" from the number/letter suffix, for example: MT-1234-AA.
Montana boating law states The identifying number assigned must be painted on or attached to each outboard side of the forward half of the motorboat, sailboat, or personal watercraft or, if there are no sides, at a corresponding location on both outboard sides of the foredeck of the motorboat, sailboat, or personal watercraft. The identifying number assigned must read from left to right in Arabic numerals and block characters of good proportion at least 3 inches tall excluding border or trim of a color that contrasts with the color of the background and be so maintained as to be clearly visible and legible. The identifying number may not be placed on the obscured underside of the flared bow where it cannot be easily seen from another vessel or ashore.
The Nebraska assigned registration number should be placed on each side of the front half of the vessel and reading left to right; they should be the only numbers on the forward half of the vessel.
It should start with two capital letters "NB" followed by a hyphen or space and three or four digits, another hyphen or space and two more capital letters in a block style font, for example: NB 1234 AA.
Boat registration numbers should be in a contrasting color to the background as well at three inches in height.
Nebraska boating law states that except as provided in subsections (2) and (3) of this section and sections 37-1249 and 37-1250, every motorboat on the waters of this state shall be numbered and no person shall operate or give permission for the operation of any vessel on such waters unless the vessel is numbered in accordance with the State Boat Act or in accordance with the laws of another state if the commission has by regulation approved the numbering system of such state and unless the certificate of number awarded to such vessel is in full force and effect and the identifying number set forth in the certificate of number is displayed and legible on each side of the forward half of the vessel.
Nevada boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat.

Nevada boating law states that the owner shall paint on or attach to each side of the bow of the motorboat the identification number in such manner as may be prescribed by regulations of the Commission in order that the number may be clearly visible. The number must be maintained in legible condition.
New Hampshire boat registration numbers should be attached on each side of the forward half of the vessel and three inches in height. The registration number should be the only number placed on the forward half of the hull.

New Hampshire boating law states that every vessel required to be registered in this state shall display the vessel numbers issued to the vessel as part of the registration process, unless the vessel is exempt under the provisions of RSA The owner shall paint on, attach or otherwise display to each side of the forward half of the vessel the numbers assigned by the department not less than 3 inches in height, with block letters of contrasting color, and they shall be clearly readable when the vessel is being operated. The numbers shall be maintained in legible condition. No numbers other than the numbers validly assigned to a vessel shall be painted, attached or otherwise displayed on either side of the forward half of such vessel.
New Jersy boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat.

New Mexico boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat.

New Mexico boating law states that the owner of each motorboat requiring numbering and inspection by this state shall file an application for number with the division on forms approved by it. The application shall be signed by the owner of the motorboat and shall be accompanied by a three year registration fee as required in Section 66-12-5.1 NMSA 1978. Upon receipt of the application in approved form, the division shall file it and issue to the applicant a certificate of number stating the number awarded to the motorboat and the name and address of the owner.
New York boat registration numbers consists of the letters "NY", four numbers, and two ending letters. A space or a hyphen should separate the first and last two letters from the four numbers, for example: NY 1234 AA. The numbers are required to be attached to both sides of the vessel's bow; the registration number should be the only number on the forward half of the boat.
Boat registration numbers should be able to be easily read from left to right; plain, block lettering three inches in high. Furthermore, they should be in a color that contrasts with that of the hull.
New York boating law states that boats (watercraft) without a motor do not need to be registered. If you use a motor (electric or fuel-driven), regardless of the size of your boat or the motor, you must register your boat. Put your registration stickers 18 inches from the bow on both sides of the boat. This is approximately the same position that the stickers are located when a boat is also required to have registration numbers on the hull.
North Carolina boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat.

North Carolina boating law states that Every vessel on the waters of this State shall be numbered, except those vessels exempted from numbering under G.S. 75A-7. No person shall operate or give permission for the operation of any vessel on the waters of this State.
About 2018 North Carolina started sending out the registration numbers without a second hyphen. This caused a little confusion how North Carolina describes how the boat numbers should appear. In one section it says that it needs hyphens between letters and numbers and in a different section they say that it needs to appear exactly as on the registration card mailed to you. We produce the decal with both hyphens so the customer can decide to remove the second hyphen if they see fit.
North Dakota boat registration numbers should appear on either side of the bow and should consist of the abbreviation ND, three numbers, and two letters with a space or hyphen between, for example: ND-123-AA. They should be the only numbers on the forward half of the hull.

North Dakota boating law states that The owner of each motorboat shall file an application for number and license with the department on forms approved by it. The application must be signed by the owner of the motorboat and must be accompanied by the appropriate fee. Upon receipt of the application in approved form, the department shall enter the same upon the records of its office and issue the applicant a certificate of number and license stating the number awarded to the motorboat and the name and address of the owner.
Ohio boat registration numbers are in three parts beginning with "OH" followed by four numbers and two letters. They should have a space or hyphen between the prefix, numbers, and suffix, for example: OH 1234 AA.

Ohio boating law states that every watercraft operated on the waters in this state shall be numbered by this state in accordance with federal law or a federally approved numbering system of another state. A watercraft numbered by this state shall display the number on the watercraft as provided in section 1547.57 of the Revised Code.
Oklahoma boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat.
