New speed limit signs provide traffic safety in Mississippi town

Drivers in Sandersville, Mississippi, will soon see a brand-new item as they travel down the road to their destination - speed limit signs.

The Laurel Leader-Call reports that local officials will post a new sign that highlights the fact that the speed limit is 45 mph. The Jones County Sheriff, Alex Hodge, is the man responsible for the new signs after receiving permission to put the signs up at a town meeting. He said that although the speed limit has always been in place, some people were not aware and that the signs would keep them better informed.

"The speed limit in that area has always been 45, but it was not posted," Hodge said in an interview with the paper. He said that the signs were needed due to the recent opening of a casino. "There were problems on their first day of business. We had six extra deputies on duty on the first day, but since that day it's been at normal operation. We just aren't having any problems yet."

Other communities have added traffic signs to heavily traveled areas. The Fergus Falls Daily Journal reports that the board of commissioners in Otter Tail County, Minnesota, approved new traffic signs for a busy intersection.
