How aluminum sign letters are made

The aluminum comes in a flat sheet and is placed on a table where a computer driven waterjet cuts each letter to precision. Waterjet cut letters are made using a fine, high pressure stream of water that carries an abrasive mineral. This fine stream cuts and allows for sharp (.020 radius) inside corners and intricate detail on small letters and characters.

Once your letter has been cut, it is prepared for finishing. The cut metal characters are turned over and drilled and tapped for stud mount hardware that is used during your installation. In the finishing process, the letter is bead-blasted to make it precise and smooth then stroke sanded to give it a natural satin finish. Stud mounting hardware is included.

Letters can be optionally anodized, an electro-chemical process, which embeds the colored dye into the microscopic pores in the aluminum surface of the letter. During the anodizing process, an aluminum oxide layer is created thus making the surface extremely hard. Anodic coatings provide good stability to ultraviolet rays. Optionally, polished aluminum letters are hand polished and the entire letter face closely conforms to ANSI US9 finish standard.

The letters are then set up on a rack where they are coated with a two-part hardened acrylic polyurethane clear-coat, then sent to an oven for baking. Your letters are then laid out for careful quality inspection then seal-tight packaged so your letters arrive mistake-free.
