Letter and Printing Club Seeks New Residence
The .918 Club, located at the Heritage Center in Lancaster, PA, has to leave their current facility and relocate by March says its new landlord, The City of Lancaster. The Club does not have the funds to pay rent and utilities, so finding a new location has been a challenge.
According to its website, the 918 club's mission is to educate the public about the history of printing while providing a working letter press job shop through regularly scheduled demonstrations. The Club educates Boy Scouts, students and other interested parties about letterpress printing and Lancaster's print history.
The city of Lancaster is rich with printing history. A historical marker across the street from the Heritage Center notes it was the site of the print shop that printed Thomas Paine's pamphlets 'Common Sense', which helped spark the Revolutionary War.
Offers for new locations have been presented from Harrisburg and Reading, but most club members live in Lancaster, according to Lancaster Online. The club would like to keep the print shop local, as most of the print history resides there, as well. But even Lancaster Newspapers will not offer the club space, though the President of Lancaster Newspapers said he was never presented with a request to house the Club.
According to Wikipedia, typography is the art of arranging type in order to make words visible. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, size, line length, and adjusting the space between lines words and pairs of letters. Letter font style and type design is a closely related craft.
Along with its demonstrations, the club displays vintage printing presses and cabinets of letters used for typography. Members of the .918 Club continue to search for a location, but even storing cabinets of letters and printing presses will be a problem, as the Club has no funds for storage costs.
