Cities and towns work to revise traffic signs

Despite the fact that the federal government recently relaxed a traffic sign mandate, one community in Illinois recently announced it would be going ahead with plans to update the displays to make driving safer.
The State Journal reports that officials in Sangamon County are continuing the process of replacing signs that have faded overtime. However, they will no longer have to meet the deadline of 2018 previously imposed by the Department of Transportation, the agency's head Ray LaHood said in a statement.
"A specific deadline for replacing street signs makes no sense and would have cost communities across America millions of dollars in unnecessary expenses," LaHood said when making the announcement.
According to the news source officials have estimated that a total of 5,000 signs need to be replaced under the standards. The Sangamon County highway engineer Tim Zahrn said he and his colleagues were going through the process methodically.
"We'll take a look at our program and make sure we're going about it the right way," Zahrn told the source.
