There is a fight brewing in Washington, D.C., over the issue of campaign signs, and neither party seems to be budging.
The Washington Post reports that a surveillance camera caught local real estate agent and former local politician Kathy Henderson taking down campaign signs in front of a diner and replacing them with signs for a candidate she is supporting. The woman caught on tape is claiming that the diner's owner, Matt Ashburn, had asked her to take down the signs in favor of the ones she had. But Ashburn said that he never told her to do such a thing.
"I in no way encouraged her to remove the signs. There is nothing I would have said, in my opinion, that any reasonable person could have taken as permission to remove those signs," he said in an interview with the Post. "The caveat here is 'any reasonable person.'"
One of the candidates who was the target of the alleged theft was Harry Thomas, a council member. He announced that he would be pressing charges against Henderson after the tape emerged.
The incident highlights the importance that campaign lawn signs can have as candidates push to get the upper hand come election time. The inexpensive form of advertising is a good way for those passing by to learn about the candidate.
