Marquee signs balance quality of life in Massachusetts city

The second-largest city in Massachusetts is giving a break to business owners who want to put up various types of signs for their businesses.
In Worcester, changes were recently made to the city's sign ordinance, giving more freedom to those looking to advertise with various types of signs. The Worcester Telegram reports that city planners made the changes to allow bigger signs to be put up and to avoid heavily enforcing restrictions on awning and canopy signs, marquee signs and wall signs.
The city's director of the Planning and Regulatory Services Division, Joel Fontane, said that the changes had been made after getting feedback from citizens in the area.
"What we've done is incorporate comments we have received from public testimony," Mr. Fontane said at a Planning Board meeting, according to the Telegraph. "This allows for more flexibility ... if you look at it in its totality, we're trying to balance the needs of the business community to advertise with quality-of-life needs in our neighborhoods."
Worcester, like many cities, is changing the way it enforces sign codes. When business owners and citizens get together to make a change, lawmakers often do what they can to write legislation that reflects their goals.
