Sidewalk sign restrictions being considered in New Jersey town
The town council of Fair Haven, New Jersey will discuss altering the town's tight restrictions on sidewalk signs in hopes of helping struggling local businesses boost sales, according to the Coastal Monmouth Bureau.
The current town laws restrict business to displaying sidewalk signs for two weeks at different times of the year after obtaining a permit. "I do it, because people might not expect me to be open on a Monday" Maureen Bay, a local business owner, told the news provider. "The purpose isn't to junk up the town, but to help the small businessperson through information.
"It's important to local businesses without thousands of dollars to spend on advertising," she continued. An adjacent town, Red Bank, is considering a similar proposal. Both towns are located along the Jersey Shore and are popular tourist destinations in the summer.
Princeton, New Jersey, a town about one hour west of Fair Haven and Red Bank, has recently enforced a similar ordinance that allows sidewalks sign posted for 14 days. According to CentralJersey.com, recent complaints led to enforcement, but the town police do not believe it has the manpower to adequately enforce the law.
